Five reasons to use Azure OMS Log Analytics

On a regular day, a lot is happening in your online Azure environment. Data is moved, Logic Apps run and business critical applications are helping your employees serve your customer better. It’s hard to keep track of everything that’s happening. Yet you should know what’s going on, because if even one process fails, the entire organization can be disrupted. That’s where Log Analytics within the Azure Operations Management Suite (OMS) comes in. It helps you monitor and alerts you of any problems in your environment.

There’s a lot of stuff you can monitor within OMS Log Analytics.

1. Get advantage of your data quickly

OMS Log Analytics can help you to use your data to your advantage. Moreover, it doesn’t require long or arduous work to get started with it, so you can reap the benefits in the blink of an eye. The software is already included in your Azure environment, you just need to check the box to start. To even further speed up the process, Log Analytics includes a number of prebuilt dashboards that you can use out of the box for general issues.

2. It’s free

While you can opt for a number of paid plans, OMS Log Analytics can also be used for free. The free version of the software includes most features you’ll really need when you want to monitor your online environment, which makes it the perfect choice for companies with a limited budget. The paid plans include a couple of nice-to-haves – no real must-haves however – like uploading custom logs and on-premise deployment of the software.

3. Let Log Analytics resolve your alerts

The recent integration of Log Analytics into the Azure Monitors opens up the possibility of some automation in your monitoring. Now, alerts from Log Analytics can activate Action Groups within Monitors. In these Action Groups you define a number of things Azure should do like sending an SMS, calling a Logic App or running an automation runbook. So when you want a certain thing to happen when an alert arises, you can create a group with the necessary actions and link it to an alert from Log Analytics.

4. Monitoring customized to your business

OMS Log Analytics’ language to build query’s is unique to the platform and is one of the main reasons to use the software. It requires some investment of your time to learn it, but it’s not the most difficult one and you’ll soon get the hang of it. Once you have mastered it, however, the language allows you to very easily build in-depth query’s from scratch to get different and detailed results and alerts. Thanks to these custom query’s, you can monitor for situations that are specific to you and your business.

5. Respond to issues quickly

With Log Analytics you can build dashboards and query’s to gather all your data in a clear-cut overview. Moreover, it allows you to implement alerts for when certain situations arise within your environment. For instance, you have a number of Logic Apps running that provide information to a business critical application. But what if a Logic App fails? Either it’ll go unnoticed, but your coworkers are working with out-of-date information which in turn can lead to wrong orders, advice… Or they’ll definitely notice and you, as an administrator, will be flooded with calls and mails. With alerts, however, you can stay on top of things. As soon as something goes awry, you’ll be alerted and you can start working on a fix.
